The finals of the ninth annual
Heat Strokes Drum Contest was held once again in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
On Saturday June 25th, but this year at the 250 seat conference center
on the campus of the McHenry County College.
The contest offered beginner.intermediate and advanced categories, with
the main focus being on Education. The intensity and curiosity was high,
with everyone wondering how the contest worked. And even more, how the
contest would turn out.  In heat stroke fashion the temperature out side
was 95 degrees. At 12 noon the master of ceremonies
Mr. Mike Ghilardi announced the first contestant in the beginner class.
With the finalist going on in reverse order of there preliminary
placing. There were 30 finalists, 10 in each class. In the beginner
class ten year old John Koeppen walked away the winner.

The Scoring is based on:
CONTENT
Repertoire              possible  10 pts.
Demand                 possible  10 pts.
Emotion                  possible  10 pts.
Expression              possible  10 pts.
EXECUTION
Timing/ Control        possible 20 pts.
Musicianship            possible 20 pts.
Rhythmic Accuracy   possible 20 pts.
TOTAL SCORE        possible 100 pts.
The top three beginners were:
1st  John Koeppen McHenry  IL.  69.60
2nd Dylan Harper  Lakewood IL   67.60
3rd Tom Genszenski   (C.L.)  IL.  66.30

In the Intermediate class. Michael Perski walked away with top honors,
playing with style and the technique of someone who has played much more
than 2 years. Followed by a documented 8 mths of playing experience from
Kristy Black. With Greg Hartwig playing under a year also.
Top three Intermediates scores were:
1st Michael Perski     Grayslake IL. 75.00
2nd Kristy Black     Crystal Lake IL. 73.60
3rd Greg Hartwig            Bartlet IL. 68.60

In the Advanced class.
Joe Babiak repeated as winner in this class by holding to a clean and
difficult solo. Winning by the slim margin of 1 pt.
Prelim winner David Oriente 17 came out
smoking on the set. but because of a 1pt. penalty. (playing over the
three min.max.) Giving the title to Mr. Babiak with out a drum off.  The
talk of the day, not to take anything away from 3rd place finisher Paul
Wandtke (mr. drum machine)
Was 5th place finisher :
14 yr. Old Hana Ford. Who with out a doubt played like a adult with a
real nice put together musical drum solo.

2nd  David Oriente Orland Pk. IL. 87.00
( Oriente one point time penalty)
3rd  Paul Wandtke Romeovill IL.   84.00

Plans for next years event is in progress with a repeat visit to the
McHenry County College, Thanks to  Dr. Tom Takayama and the entire list
of many volunteers. Who with out there time and patience, once again
this contest could not have been possible. Thank You All.
